How do you start to increase longevity?

Looking into the effects of the fashion industry on the environment their is the necessity for people to become educated on keeping their clothing longer an how to do so. The diagram below suggests many ways to keep clothing longer. From buying higher quality, washing garments less and at a lower price. Recycling preowned garments as well as many other things such as looking into clothing sizes and production.

I have continued to look into modularity in garments in order to increase their longevity, making garments more inclusive, fun and last just that bit longer to reduce the amount of clothing waste produced in many countries.

Modularity by definition refers to a garment that have detachable or adjustable elements that can be removed, changed, remodelled and altered into an alternate shape/function of the garment itself. The outdoor industry has adopted many forms of modularity such as trousers that zip off into shorts and coats that have a removable fleece lining. However modular fashion is more related to the garment changing in style rather than function. Designing purely to eradicate waste by regenerating a product constantly.

The importance of modular garments simply allows the extension of a garments livelihood and fits perfectly into the circular economy. This is shown by lets suggest the idea of a ripped sleeve, bring replaced by another sleeve rather than an entire new garment and the previous garment going completely to waste. With this principle there is also a reduction of washing with elements that are stained or marked being able to be removed and washed separately rather than washing the entire garment and potentially reducing the lifespan of the garment as a whole.
